RRZE - Setting up the HPC-Lab at the FH-Nürnberg
Guidelines and surrounding conditions:

- Setting up a High Performance Computing-Lab at the FH Nürnberg
- Consisting only of consumer "Off the Shelf" hardware
- OpenPBS based Job-Scheduling
- Consistent Shared-Home environment
- Setup period of 20 weeks
Realization:
The project was launched in October 2004. The framework was an practical internship an was therefore carried out by an FH student, supervised by the HPC-Group.
The existent hardware basis was fully utilized with only minor enhancements. First step was the acquisition of a server system which serves the purpose of a combined Frontend and Fileserver. Thus running the queuing system (OpenPBS / Maui) this server coordinates the usage of the 13 cluster nodes and the scheduling and distribution of the submitted jobs. Step by step further nodes were integrated into the cluster and the queuing system, which made some improvements of the infrastructure necessary.
